The Spartan Race began in 2010 as a way to push everyday desk jockeys to get more active, healthy, and happy by competing in obstacle course races. From its humble beginnings in the Green Mountains of Vermont, its founder, Joe De Sena, was inspired to create a community who push and inspire each other like the warriors of ancient Sparta.
This year, the Spartan Race will be held at Castaic Lake State Recreation Area in Castaic, CA, from December 7th through the 8th 2019. Today, we have put together a short guide for those who will be attending or participating in the Spartan Race at Castaic Lake.
Transportation
Castaic is part of Los Angeles County; however, it is about an hour and 20-minute drive there from LAX (Los Angeles International Airport). With that said, renting a vehicle would be the best way to get to and from the airport. Once you get a rental, you will pass through Santa Clarita (which includes Valencia) to get to the scenic Castaic Lake State Recreation Area for the Spartan Race.
Lodging
Since Valencia is the next closest city with modern amenities to Castaic Lake State Recreation Area, you should probably start your search there. One of the best options for a good night’s rest would be staying at the Hyatt Regency Valencia, which is just over 10 minutes by car to or from Castaic Lake State Recreation Area. The hotel offers guests luxurious comfort with their plush beds and luxe bath amenities, a perfect way to prepare or recover from the race. They have a heated pool and an onsite restaurant in case you are feeling sore from the race and want to stay in. The Hilton Garden Inn Valencia Six Flags is another popular choice. As the name says, it’s quite close to Six Flags, which is a fun place to spend a day before a big race. This hotel is a budget-friendly option that doesn’t skimp on amenities.
Food
There are plenty of dining options in Valencia before, during, and after the Spartan Race. There are plenty of eateries at the Westfield Valencia Town Center mall. They have fast food establishments like Chipotle, Chick-fil-A, Burger King, and Dairy Queen, to just name a few. There is also a Cheesecake Factory, Buca di Beppo, BJ’s Restaurant, and other restaurants that offer Japanese, Middle Eastern, and Chinese cuisines in the area. You can drive or leave the rental at the hotel; either way, everything is close by when in Valencia. This is particularly convenient, especially if you are going to do a food run to and from the event.
Attractions
If you decided to stay a day or two after the Spartan Race, then there’s plenty to do around the area. First, if you were too busy during the race, take some time to thoroughly enjoy Castaic Lake State Recreation Area. You may have noticed the pristine lake during the race, rent a boat/paddleboard/kayak and take in the beautiful and serene scenery Castaic Lake has to offer. You can also take your time strolling around at a leisurely pace around its 4,224-acre park.
Outside Castaic Lake State Recreation Area, a 10-minute drive will get you to Six Flags Magic Mountain. There, you can ride thrilling roller coasters by day and by night you can take in the Holiday in the Park event. After you’ve had your fill of fun and excitement, you can wind down by catching a movie back at the Westfield Valencia Town Center mall in the Regal Edwards movie theatre.
Save the date, register, and get ready for the Spartan Race, December 7th and 8th, 2019. You won’t want to miss it. See you there!
